Power Auras: The past, present, and future of UI Geekery

Good morning everybody, and welcome to Eternal Farming!

The goal of this blog is to bring you useful information about PC RPGs, namely World of Warcraft.

I suppose as the servers reset I should be getting some much needed rest, but instead I'm going to get a rolling start on this blog. First order of business --  my new favorite mod. Perhaps you've watched videos on tankspot or otherwise where the toon in question will have various symbols popping around on there screen, alerting of cooldowns, low-health/mana, and class specific procs. I have recently discovered this mod to be Power Auras. It doesn't come with any pre-loaded alerts, and can be a bit daunting at first, but I assure you that after taking a few minutes for setup you will not be disappointed.

The easiest way to get familiar with Power Auras is to borrow some strings from friendly players around the web. We will be dealing with strips of code called 'strings' which you can find by doing a simple websearch (i.e., affliction warlock power auras). Once you've installed the mod, just type /powa while in-game to pull up the interface. Next click 'import string' and simply paste the block of nonsense you've copied into the dialogue box. I've made a few of my own, which I'll upload with screenshots soon, but meanwhile checkout these two sites I found helpful...

Really clean and artistically inspired auras for the various forms of druid by Kae at the link above. Also included here are some auras for common ICC and Ruby Sanctum debuffs. I'm looking forward to testing these out in Icecrown tonite.

Here's a link to Rivkah's Auras. http://www.anybrowser.org/wow/power_auras.html These are slightly more utilitarian perhaps, and you'll find auras here for hunter, rogue, warlock, and warrior. I think he posted survival auras for hunter.

The image below shows my own shot auras I threw together on the fly for my MM hunter before our 25ICC last week. The outer three are cooldown notices from outside in for Multi-Shot, Arcane Shot, and Chimaera Shot. The inner green ring only shows when Serpent's Sting is not applied to the current target. The health and mana bars you see are part of another mod, which is called IceHUD. This was a test run with a complete UI revamp, and I'll need to move things around a bit to clean it up.

Also, if you find that nothing seems to be happening within the mod, just do a quick /reload and it should work just fine. Apparently there can arise conflicts if you are using multiple add-ons, and this is a quick and simple fix that has worked for me every time. In fact I find I have to do this at almost every login, so be sure to test your auras ahead of time.

If you have questions, or want to share a string of your own auras, please post'em up!
